Only recently I added this word to my English vocabulary, "Chaperone Lady" or better known as Dai Kum Jie. Chinese has dozens of traditional customs in wedding, so we thought it would be better to have this lady to guide us through a smooth and blissful chinese wedding.
I was checking with few good friends who has recently got married, got a few contacts from them. Apparently there are some criteria to fulfil as a Chaperone, which are:
- Pleasant appearance
- Quick thinking and observant
- Fluent with auspicious speech; best in yours and in-law's dialect
- Well-versed in traditions, ceremonies and important customs
For us, we prefer someone who's less pushy and with modern thinking, someone who can cheer up the wedding events and bring fun to the serious rituals in Chinese wedding.
So after speaking to a few ladies, we finally made decision to hire "Tou Jie or Doris" from Thean Hou Temple as our Chaperone Lady. She's a lovely lady, always wears a big smile on her face and was really friendly to us. She has more than 20 years of experience being a Chaperone, so we could trust her and let her guide us through the customary and rituals on our actual day. Her charges are reasonable too, RM 500 nett.
Yet another item on the checklist - DONE!
